Check out this tragic NYT story about stolen academic papers. The cruel corruption of local officials is well known but always worth reporting. More intriguing, however, is the awesome power of a single paper file. I long ago misplaced almost all my academic records and I have never been asked for proof of my degrees when applying for anything — except in China. Is this a bureaucratic tic or a sensible precaution against fraud?
